I’ve been thinking a lot about this scene from Episode 8.

It’s very brief, but there’s so much food for thought in it. It’s the only scene in the series where Jopson has more than a fleeting exchange of words with anyone other than Crozier, and juxtaposing these two specific characters against each other is so heavy with potential.

Jopson’s character is defined by loyalty and duty – to Crozier specifically, and to his job more generally. Hickey has no sense of loyalty or duty. His character is defined by self-preservation and the desire to survive at all costs.

At this point in the story, Hickey despises Crozier. By extension, he probably despises Jopson, too. Likewise, Jopson, who is invariably cheerful and polite when around officers, has nothing but contempt for Hickey.

The dialogue’s very brief:

Hickey: Why is Sergeant Tozer being held? Jopson: You’re lucky you weren’t just shot, Mr Hickey. Hickey: Do you have a sudden gift for aim, Mr Jopson? Jopson: Everything we ate growing up started with a gun. My aim’s fine, Mr Hickey. I’ve shot smaller hawks than you.

Jopson’s smiling when he delivers that last line. He’s amused that Hickey thinks he’s soft, that he doesn’t know how to handle a rifle. He’s in control of the situation.

Hickey’s face is briefly emotionless before he looks away and rearranges it into a smirk. I read another post on here recently – can’t remember the OP's name, sorry – that suggests Hickey smirks when he’s embarrassed, and I think there’s something to that. When he’s feeling powerless he can’t allow himself to feel fear or anger; he deflects it all into appearing amused by the situation. It’s how he regains control, by not giving anyone the satisfaction of rattling him.

From here I’m just extrapolating from what we’re given, but I feel this tells us a lot about both of them.

My headcanon for Hickey is that he grew up in extreme poverty and a highly precarious environment. He was an orphan raised in an institution, or lived in an abusive and unstable household. Either way, he missed out on love and stability at a critical developmental stage, and it damaged his sense of empathy. He is not completely unable to care about others – he asks about Tozer, he acts to save people from the fire at Carnivale – but it’s always secondary to survival, and he finds the idea of devotion to others a bit pathetic.

We know Hickey resents the officers. He resents Neptune for being a dog that, in his opinion, gets treated better than he does. So I imagine he also resents Jopson, but it’s resentment mixed with contempt and disgust. Rather than allow himself to feel intimidated, he can easily move those uncomfortable feelings around to “this man is beneath me” – Hickey would never degrade himself by being a servant, especially not to someone he holds in such low esteem as Crozier, and he takes the opportunity to make himself feel better by getting a dig in.

However, Jopson isn’t easily intimidated. Mainly because he’s got the gun, but also because of how he sees himself. My headcanon here is that although Jopson is also from a humble background, he was probably better off than Hickey. And more importantly, he was loved. He had people around him who modeled kindness and respect for others, and probably emphasised duty as a core moral value.

He doesn’t see service as degrading. He takes pride in it. He has a deep respect for Crozier, and having just been given a very unconventional battlefield promotion of sorts, he knows Crozier respects him too. That’s a source of strength for him. Plus, you don’t really need to go deep to consider why he’d hate Hickey; the little bastard just murdered Irving.

In the next scene, it’s Jopson who walks Hickey to the gallows and loops the noose around his neck, and he looks damn satisfied doing it. Barely a minute, all told, but damn, I just love the potential of Most Loyal Guy vs Least Loyal Guy / Good Boy vs Absolutely Terrible Boy / Teacher’s Pet vs The Shittiest Kid In School. (Couldn’t decide on best shorthand for it so you get all three, lol.)

BONUS ROUND -

You know what else makes this fascinating?

Fucking GIBSON. Gibson and Jopson never interact on screen and I wish they had because Gibson is the other shared connection between Jopson and Hickey.

Gibson is a steward, but he has no particular attachment to the officers he serves. He, not Hickey, is the first crew member we see discussing mutiny. Whereas Jopson seems to belong in officers’ country, Gibson is almost always depicted outside it.

Gibson and Jopson presumably cross paths all the time as Terror stewards, but we have no idea what they think of each other. Does Gibson envy Jopson’s closeness with Crozier or does he, like Hickey, think being attached to the person you’re serving is pathetic? Does Jopson have any suspicions about Gibson’s relationship with Hickey or his growing dissatisfaction with Crozier’s leadership? I don’t know, the canon doesn’t go there! But it’s interesting to think about, right?

My thoughts on Helluva Boss' "Masterminds" episode

-Is it me or is the pacing too fast as usual?

-Jesus we have too many characters

-Satan is the only good design of the Sin and is one of the few characters in the Hellverse I like. I wish I could steal him ;m;

-Of fucking course Blitz makes up with his scumbag of an abuser. Gotta love shitty yaoi tropes

-Stolas didn't die in the episode. If that actually happen, I would have forgiven this episode for everything, especially if Blitz celebrated

-Blitz is the only one talked about while the rest of IMP is sidelined

-I will admit, while the gags at the beginning weren't funny, they were at least amusing, especially the car one

-Classic Vi with the fuck spam

-Is it me or do most characters here don't matter to the plot?

-Loona's moment with the picture of her and Blitz is unearned when you remembered she's abusive to him for no reason, especially the episode where she kicked him in the balls for no reason

-All of this could have been avoided if Blitz just got an Asmodeus crystal from the beginning of the series

Fun fact: Once Stolas conformed a song number, I dropped this episode.

So yeah, this episode was butt as always.

Lando Norris had never been one to back down from a challenge. It was what made him so competitive, what drove him to the top in the world of racing.

But when you became his teammate, it felt like his world had been flipped upside down. There was something about you—your sharp wit, your relentless drive, the way you never let anyone tell you what to do—that grated on his nerves.

Maybe it was the way you challenged him at every turn, or maybe it was the fact that you were so good, so damn good that it made him question his own abilities.

But whatever it was, you two couldn’t stand each other.

From the first moment you were assigned as teammates, the rivalry began. At every team meeting, you shot down his ideas and made snarky comments.

On the track, you never gave him an inch. It was like a game—who could get the best lap times, who could outwit the other. Every win you had felt like a personal affront to Lando’s pride, and every time you looked at him with that confident smirk on your face, he could feel his blood boiling.

And it wasn’t just the racing.

You hated the way he seemed so effortlessly popular, so always at ease, while you had to fight for every ounce of respect. You hated how Lando could turn on his charm and get people to adore him, while you had to constantly prove yourself, fight for every scrap of attention.

The tension between the two of you was so thick you could cut it with a knife. But neither of you was willing to back down. Every insult, every sharp comment, only made the rivalry worse.

You fought like cats and dogs, and yet... neither of you could ever stay mad for long.

It came to a head during a particularly heated post-race debrief. Lando had been in a foul mood all day, frustrated by a series of mistakes that had cost him valuable points.

You, on the other hand, had finished ahead of him again, something that hadn’t sat well with him.

“I’m just saying,” Lando snapped, throwing his hands up as the discussion continued, “if we had followed my strategy, I would’ve had a better chance at a higher finish. But instead, we got stuck in traffic.”

“Oh, spare me,” you shot back, rolling your eyes. “Maybe you should stop blaming everyone else for your mistakes. If you hadn’t been so reckless on that first lap, you might’ve actually made it out ahead of the rest of us.”

Lando’s nostrils flared. “I was doing what I needed to do to make up for lost time. You can’t just play it safe in this sport.”

“And that’s why you’re always so damn reckless,” you retorted, crossing your arms over your chest, glaring at him. “Maybe if you thought things through instead of just reacting, you’d actually have a better shot at the title. But instead, you’re too busy acting like a show-off.”

His jaw clenched, and the room seemed to grow even more tense. Everyone in the room, from the engineers to the team principal, was watching the two of you like it was an episode of a reality show.

The argument seemed to be escalating, neither of you willing to concede an inch.

“I’m getting tired of you undermining everything I do,” Lando bit out, his voice low and dangerous.

“Oh, please,” you spat, your eyes narrowing. “I’m just stating the obvious. You can’t handle competition. Maybe if you focused more on the race and less on your ego, we’d all be better off.”

The words hung in the air, and for a moment, the room fell into an uncomfortable silence. Lando stared at you, his chest rising and falling with every breath.

But underneath the anger, there was something else—something that felt deeper than mere rivalry.

And that’s when it hit him.

He was attracted to you.

The realization shook him. He tried to push it aside, bury it under more anger, more frustration. But it lingered, gnawing at him in the quiet moments when the racing was over and the team was winding down.

Every time you shot him a look, every time you won—every time you were right, he couldn’t help but feel his chest tighten.

He hated it.

Hated the way you got under his skin.

Hated the way your smile made him forget how mad he was at you.

Hated the way he couldn’t stop thinking about you.

But he refused to let it show.

The rivalry, the distance, it was easier to keep it that way. You were his teammate, and he couldn’t afford to let his guard down.

Not now, not when everything was on the line. But it was impossible to ignore the chemistry that simmered just beneath the surface.

And then, one night, everything fell apart.

It was after a particularly tough race where the two of you had both been involved in a collision with another driver, one that had resulted in you both being forced to retire from the race.

The night had been a disaster, and you were both too angry and too tired to deal with each other properly.

You were in the team’s garage, standing by your car, trying to cool off before heading back to the hotel. Lando was pacing nearby, his hands running through his hair, frustration radiating off him in waves.

“You know, I’m getting sick of this,” Lando muttered under his breath, looking over at you. “You always think you’re so much better than me, like I don’t know what I’m doing.”

You snapped back immediately. “You’re the one who keeps making excuses for your mistakes, Lando. Don’t act like I’m the problem.”

It was like a switch flipped.

The tension between you had been building for months, but now it was all coming to a head. Lando strode over to you, his jaw clenched and his fists at his sides.

“You want to know the truth?” Lando’s voice was low, almost a growl. “I don’t hate you. I never have. I’m not angry because you’re better than me or because I’m some childish idiot. I’m angry because I can’t stand how *much* I care about you. You drive me crazy, Y/N. I hate that I want to make this work with you so badly.”

You stood frozen, shock overtaking your features. Your heart raced, but you couldn’t form the words. He was right in front of you, and everything you had tried to ignore, all the feelings you had buried deep down, were suddenly surfacing.

“I’ve been pushing you away because I can’t handle it,” Lando continued, his voice cracking slightly. “I’ve been afraid to admit that I want something more. Something with you.

But I’m not going to do that anymore. I can’t keep pretending.”

You were speechless for a long moment. This wasn’t the Lando you knew—the cocky, confident racer. This was raw, vulnerable Lando. The one who was afraid of losing everything. And in that moment, you realized you’d been afraid of the same thing.

But the truth hit you hard. You didn’t want to push him away anymore either.

You couldn’t.

“I’m not afraid anymore,” you whispered, taking a step toward him. “I’m not afraid to feel something for you.”

Lando’s eyes softened as he took a step closer. And then, with a surge of emotion, he kissed you—not out of competition, but because, despite everything, he had always loved you.

It wasn’t easy, but slowly, things started to change. From enemies to something more, the shift was gradual, but undeniable. No longer was there bitterness, no longer was there rivalry. Instead, there was partnership, trust, and the possibility of something more.

And it was in that moment, on the track and off, that you finally realized: what you had wasn’t just about racing.

It was about you two.

Together.

Lizzie’s I honestly didn’t even think of the fact that she became a “shadow lady” until I saw someone’s comment

Bdubs having powers to skip the night??? Like that’s, in my opinion, the most fitting power out of all of them. Slow down time is cus he wants the sun and day to last longer obviously

Scar having super strength when he is the one who usually has abs and whatnot on his skin, and being able to ride people is just the funniest to give to scar cus of all the out of context things

BigB being able to summon creakings??? The man who based in the pale forest and slowly being taken over by the creakings being able to SUMMON CREAKINGS???? Idk that one just is so crazy

Ren being able to change into others could (lore wise) be from that time he was Tango during wild life

Same with Gem, since she was Cleo in Limited life then she isn’t as tethered to the world as others. It also could be cus she was such a recent addition, the watchers don’t have as a good grasp on her

I can’t think of anything right now, but there’s gotta be something lore wise/angsty about how Grian doesn’t have a set power, he is only able to take others for a few minutes. Almost like the watchers don’t want to let him have any full power, just smaller doses of others

I don’t really know what to say about Tangos power, can’t really think of anything

Pearl essentially having an elytra, she’s a goddess trying to return to her higher place up in the clouds

❣️ After barely having any hope for this year's gmmtv event, I'm very pleased with the lineup. I'm looking forward to most of the announcements and they really managed to give us a few surprises. Only 2 lakorns and 18 BL/GL productions is definitely a new record lol, it looks like the str8s are going extinct. Thank god. Thumbs up!

❣️ Obviously I have to talk about THK, we are only on episode 2 but it's already owning my existence lol. I had lots of inhibitions about it being weird and cringe but I'm loving it so far. The good ol' jojo chaos is kicking in hard and yes it is silly and unserious but in the best way. It's everything I need right now. My 4 boys are all delivering the best they have to offer and I really hope the energy stays on that level. The show is getting a lot of hate and I understand why it's not for everyone but idgaf. They're just jealous bc their faves could never. 10/10 I'm obsessed.

I wonder if Detective Fisher in Who's Lila was at all meant to be a reference to Detective Fisher in Pie in the Sky? The British detective series about a restaurant owner chef who solves murder mysteries and crimes using his knowledge of ingredients and his connections in the restaurant business.

(It's a very very good show btw, if you haven't yet seen it.)

But the chef is the protagonist, Crabbe. Detective Fisher is this jerk:

The show makes you hate hate HATE this guy.

So, part of the show's premise is that the whole reason why Crabbe solves murder mysteries for the police (instead of, you know, the police doing it themselves) is because Detective Fisher is blackmailing Crabbe. You see, Crabbe was involved in a bungled attempt at trying to catch a high-profile Moriarty-type criminal (which ended in Crabbe getting shot in the leg, mind) and Fisher has the power and position to spin it as, "You were helping the criminal get away."

So Detective Fisher gives Crabbe a proposition, "I won't tell anyone and let you run your dream restaurant. And in return, you help me solve cases from time to time."

So Fisher is the reason why Crabbe can't just live a normal life as a chef doing his passion: Cooking.

But it doesn't end there: Throughout the series, Crabbe is a thoroughly awful character. He is motivated with looking good (in reputation) and keeping face (with the police force's reputation) over everything else. This includes getting the right perpetrator, solving the case correctly, or helping the victims/survivors of the crime receive closure or justice. Every time he's given a choice, he picks the selfish option. He is played excellently by actor Malcolm Sinclair, who brings just the right amount of self-absorbed and menacing vibes to the character.

Pie in the Sky puts a lot of effort and screen time into making you hate Detective Fisher. And that's coming from a person who has watched A LOT of private detective series with ACAB sentiments in their portrayal of the police in relation to the (amateur) detective main character.

In one episode, the main character buys a new rooster for his chicken co-op, and he names the rooster Fisher after him because the rooster "looks too proud and sure of [himself]." And it's treated as a comedic, cathartic moment.

Both Pie in the Sky's and Who's Lila's Detective Fisher are both shout-y police detectives who go about the wrong means to try and find the perpetrator. They both are more motivated to find a perp over finding the perp. They both don't like thinking outside the box they've built up for themselves about how the world works ("Save that mumbo jumbo for Detective Yu," anyone?). And they are both paralleled by a more competent detective who actually tries to get at the heart of the mystery in order to solve it (Crabbe and Detective Yu, respectively).

idk how popular Pie in the Sky is in Europe outside of the UK, or if Garage Heathens has seen the show, Fisher is a pretty old and commonly-used name, but that's who I think of when I hear the name "Detective Fisher."

Detective fisher literally scariest who's lila character. To me. no matter how many times i replayed the interrogation scene to get all the endings no matter how i anticipated the music change itd always scare the FUCK out of me. i cannot look at that dude without getting goosebumps

!!!! i have so many ships for my best girl ever yes oh my god thank you for asking.

my top pairing is probably Vic Sage/the Question. Vic is the basic answer, but man. i love them so much. no couple has matched each other's freak like that have. Justice League Unlimited is a great adaptation of Helena in general, but it also did a great adaptation of Helena and Vic's relationship. how he just dedicates himself to helping her with no expected return, but also wants to make sure she doesn't go too far in a hunt for vengeance that never ends for her. i think a lot of characters often want to change Helena or expect things out of her for their own needs, like the Batfam and the BoP. but Vic is one of the few people who just wants her to be better for her own good. when he tries to stop her from killing it's not because of his morals, it's because he doesn't want this crusade to consume her. and i just. man i think about them a lot. Helena rlly likes weird little men who give themselves wholly to her.

Zinda Blake/Lady Blackhawk is also a top ship for me. tbh i just like Zinda. but i do love how Helena and Zinda interact, being the more rough and tumble members of the BoP. they're both outsiders, in different ways. Helena is an outsider of the Batfam and Zinda is literally from a different time and an outsider to the current world. their friendship is so genuine and i think if Babs and Dinah can have. whatever homoerotic nonsense going on during BoP, then Zinda and Helena deserve some homoerotic nonsense too. as a treat.

if we're willing to count New-52 Helena, then i enjoy Helena/Dick/Tiger. i think Helena and Dick being a past relationship is really important in pre-Flashpoint for Helena's development, though i don't ship them as a serious couple beyond a fling. but in the New-52, i think this throuple be fun. Helena and Tiger respect each other as two very driven, no-nonsense agents and then well. they both clearly have some kind of thing for Dick. so it's fun finding the balance of how they could all work together romantically.

and ofc. it's a crime to mention Helena ships and not mention Renee Montoya/the Question. every time they interact it's really fucking gay. it's so gay that Kate Kane, Renee's own ex, assumed Helena and Renee were gay. i cannot be convinced against this ship. i genuinely think this ship should be canon. i mean. DC did tease us with this moment from an alternate universe and it's lived rent for me since. fucking criminal for us to only get one panel of what we could have if DC let Helena be a fruit in the main universe. being in love with Helena Bertinelli should be a right of passage for the Question mantle, i personally believe. if you asked me like. genuinely who i want to see Helena date in the current comics, Renee is my top pick. (i would say Vic but he's fucking dead and the New-52 butchered him so rip my mans-)

besides those ships, just about every ship for Helena probably falls into the category of rarepair. like you said i've talked about my love for Helena/Steph before bc god. i think it should be a thing more people ship. once i finish the fic i'm writing about them i will convince others to like it.

i also think Helena/Cass could be fun. in a *lot* of ways Helena and Cass are narrative parallels to each other. Helena was a victim of her family being murdered at about the same age Cass was forced to be a murderer. Helena grows up to believe in lethal justice because of this, and Cass grows up to be staunchly against it. Cass' Batgirl suit was made *by* Helena. they both want to be protectors of the most vulnerable people. they balance each other out in a lot of ways and i think they should kiss about it.

also probably a rarepair, i think Helena/Lady Shiva is fun. their fight during Birds of Prey (2010) had... questionable moments for Helena's characterization, but i do love so much that Helena knocks Shiva off her feet and gains a deep respect from Shiva. like. Shiva gives her a nickname and shows her admiration. i would like to see fanfic where Shiva continues to be weirdly admirable of Helena and bothering her non-stop. they could be a fun fucked up toxic yuri moment. this is just. so gay to me.

my most rare Helena pair would probably be Helena Wayne, actually. but specifically Helena Wayne of JSA (2022). ever since, for some reason, it was made canon that the current Helena Wayne was named after Helena Bertinelli and took the name Huntress to honor her i *cannot* stop thinking about them meeting. because in-universe it makes *no* fucking sense for Bruce to name his kid after *Helena Bertinelli*, someone he's regularly at odds with and doesn't like. it's clearly an awkward explanation to try to make the whole two Huntress situation make sense. (it's almost as bad as Helena Wayne in the New-52 using Helena Bertinelli as an alias.) but because it's such an odd choice, i do think it could be fun for Helena Wayne, when she's back in time to see Bruce, to find Helena Bertinelli to get to know the woman she was named after and Helena Bertinelli just being. baffled by the idea of *Batman* naming his kid after her. it could be a fun fucked up moment.

my other super rarepair is Kara Zor-L/Power Girl. they had like. one meaningful interaction of JSA Classified and it's been PLAGUING me. something about when Power Girl doesn't remember her past and she's seeking a friend, she instinctively goes to find Huntress? but it's wrong bc this isn't *her* Huntress and neither of them understand why Power Girl would seek Helena out? god it's so good. i'm always a big fan of ships where one person in the ship is *so* obviously using the other person as a replacement for someone they lost and they both know it. it's such a doomed angsty thing where you could play with Helena actually really liking Kara, but knowing that she's just a replacement for Kara's Helena Wayne. good fucked up shit man.

and lastly: i really ship her with Dawn Granger/Dove. there's no canon basis for this, they didn't have a ton of interactions even when they were both on the BoP. but there's a very kind innocence to Dawn that contrasts Helena's violence really well. and i do love a ship with a corruption kink vibe to it. let Helena corrupt Dawn. i could write such fucked up porn about these two.
